Experiential Learning

Mr. Braaflat's 5th Grade Classroom Learning

Mr. Braaflat's class came in for the day and knew to grab their computers from the cart and go to their desk. He uses Google Classroom to set up information for the day so students know what to expect and ca easily access information anytime. They started with a choice of a video or article on states of matter. The students seemed to enjoy the quiet in the morning and being able to choose how they were going to get an intro into today's subject.

After students were done with the article and video he had set up three different stations for the students to observe. He discussed with them the different types of matter and then explained the stations. One had rocks, a pencil, ice, and old play do-oh, the second had juice and water, then the third had balloons to fill up and water with dawn they could mix to blow with a straw to make bubbles. The students got to explore the different stations and take notes on differences and observations. After they were able to go onto NowComment to discuss their finding anonymously. The teacher was able to see who was saying what but the students could not see what peer was commenting. This allowed for judgement free learning and language skills to be able to discuss what they are trying to learn. Mr. Braaflat said that he uses this to be able to know where students are sitting at with a subject or if his students are interested in different branches of the idea. He enjoys the fact that students can comment on parts of a comment and that he can add his own articles of videos for the students to discuss.

Mr. Braaflat also does Kahoot Fridays, which I was not there for, but he empathized how much he enjoys Kahoot for a tool in the classroom. The students are very engaged when it comes to doing a Kahoot review. He noticed that throughout the week students take more notes and engage in classroom discussions for the purpose to learn the information for Fridays. He also likes being able to get a baseline of how the week of lessons helped the students and if he should continue on the subject or move on the next week.

* I was not able to get pictures of the classroom because a majority of parents did not sign the consent sheet or signed no they were not comfortable with their students being involved in a college blog.
